Never published before, the garden is the life's work of Russell Fuchs, a native New Yorker and self-
trained gardening enthusiast. Since 2001, Fuchs has orchestrated the creation of a compound of
dizzying variety and complexity, with a great lawn, grand allée, orchard, woodland, working farm, greenhouse, and
host of specialized gardens.
In the essay Fuchs contributes to Birdsong, he eloquently describes his total
immersion in gardening and the almost spiritual dimension he experiences from living so close to
perpetual growth and change.
